Employees Mobilize to Deliver 10,000 Face Shields to Area Hospitals
Waukesha, Wisconsin – April 14, 2020 – EmbedTek, LLC, a technology company specializing in the design and manufacture of embedded computer systems, software, sensors, and integrated displays, announced today that executives delivered 10,000 medical face shields to Milwaukee-area hospitals. The face shields were produced by a group of EmbedTek employees, their families, and friends, to help health care workers meet an urgent need for protection while fighting the coronavirus.
The entire effort came together in less than two weeks, after the University of Wisconsin Makerspace made prototype designs available on March 26th.
“I came across the story on March 30th and forwarded the information to our Engineering and Sourcing teams to see if the material would be available for us to produce,” said Dan Aicher, CEO of EmbedTek, LLC. “They confirmed it was, and had a prototype ready by April 3. By April 9, we had production quantities of materials in-house and were ready to get to work.”
The team of EmbedTek volunteers set up four workstations in an open production area at EmbedTek’s facility in Waukesha. Four shifts of volunteers worked from the morning of April 10 to the afternoon of April 11. A total of 10,000 face shields were loaded that day and distributed to hospitals and clinics in need. Recipients included: Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – St. Joseph Campus; Froedtert Hospital; Aurora Health Centers; and Marshfield Clinic.
Drop-off locations were chosen after calling local hospital organizations and determining those with the most acute need and expected ongoing need.
“We learned in the process that production from traditional suppliers is ramping up to meet demand in the coming weeks,” Aicher said. “Everyone at EmbedTek enjoyed the opportunity to exercise their talents and energy in a way that could do some good during this time. We are happy to produce more if the need for community-sourced PPE continues.”
